2 Tle. in 1 Band. 78 S., 3 Bll. Rückenbroschur. Obwohl der Titel Gottscheds "seltene Verdienste" anpreist, ist der gesamte Text als ironische "Lobeserhebung" konzipiert. In den 1740er Jahren hatte sich die deutsche Gelehrtenwelt tief gespalten. Johann Christoph Gottsched, der lange Zeit als unangefochtener "Literaturpapst" in Leipzig galt, verlor zunehmend an Einfluss. Seine Kritiker warfen ihm einen starren, seelenlosen und rein regelbasierten Poesiebegriff vor. Das Denckmal wurde verfasst, um Gottscheds Eitelkeit und seinen autokratischen Herrschaftsanspruch über die deutsche Dichtkunst lächerlich zu machen. Das Erscheinen des Denckmals im Jahr 1746 fiel mitten in den Höhepunkt des sogenannten Zürcher Literaturstreits. Gottsched lieferte sich eine erbitterte Debatte mit den Schweizern Johann Jakob Bodmer und Johann Jakob Breitinger. Während Gottsched forderte, Dichtung müsse streng rational und der Natur nachgeahmt sein, plädierten die Schweizer für die Kraft der Phantasie, das Wunderbare und das Gefühl. Lange und Sulzer schlugen sich mit dieser Schrift endgültig auf die Seite der Schweizer und leiteten damit das historische Ende von Gottscheds Vormachtstellung in der deutschen Literatur ein. Dem Werk ist ein "merckwürdiger Anhang" beigefügt.
