Paperback. Condition: New. Blues Hall of Fame Inductee, 2019 - A "Classic of Blues Literature"In 1941 and '42 African American scholars from Fisk University-among them the noted composer and musicologist John W. Work III, sociologist Lewis Wade Jones, and graduate student Samuel C. Adams Jr.-joined folklorist Alan Lomax of the Library of Congress on research trips to Coahoma County, Mississippi. Their mission was "to document adequately the cultural and social backgrounds for music in the community." Among the fruits of the project were the earliest recordings by the legendary blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. The hallmark of the study was to have been a joint publication of its findings by Fisk and the Library of Congress. While this publication was never completed, Lost Delta Found is composed of the writings, interviews, notes, and musical transcriptions produced by Work, Jones, and Adams in the Coahoma County study. Their work captures, with compelling immediacy, a place, a people, a way of life, and a set of rich musical traditions as they existed in the 1940s.…

Blue cloth with gilt titled spine; with Dust Jacket as issued. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Fine in near fine DJ. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: This regiment, identified as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments, fought in the Western Theater. The author, Samuel Jones, enlisted in June 1862, mustering into the "Johnson County Regiment" the 22nd Iowa. This work is based on the field diary Jones kept throughout his service. This is a fine reprint of the original 1907 edition. REFERENCES DORN IA 213; COULTER 267: "Jones' travels were more extensive than those of most Federal soldiers. Enlisting in 1862 in Iowa City, he saw service first in southeast Missouri, arriving there by railway from Iowa City to Davenport, down the Mississippi by boat to St. Louis, and overland to Rolla, Pilot Knob, St.Genevieve, and other points in that region. Further movements took him by boat down the Mississippi to Vicksburg and after its fall to New Orleans; as far west as New Iberia, returning by boat to the mouth of the Rio Grande, up the coast as far as Indianola, and back by sea to New Orleans. He then went up the Mississippi and Red rivers as far as Alexandria, but was soon on his way to the easter war area, passing down the Mississippi, through the Gulf, and along the Atlantic coast to the Shenandoah Valley, stopping at Fortress Monroe and Washington." NEVINS I pg 115: "Among the best reminiscences of Iowa soldiers; Jones recounted in diary form his travels through the Gulf region and his experiences as a war prisoner." MULLINS/REED #127 (the 1907 edition). FOX pg 411.…
