CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: This regiment, identified as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments, fought in the Western Theater. The author, Samuel Jones, enlisted in June 1862, mustering into the "Johnson County Regiment" the 22nd Iowa. This work is based on the field diary Jones kept throughout his service. This is a fine reprint of the original 1907 edition. REFERENCES DORN IA 213; COULTER 267: "Jones' travels were more extensive than those of most Federal soldiers. Enlisting in 1862 in Iowa City, he saw service first in southeast Missouri, arriving there by railway from Iowa City to Davenport, down the Mississippi by boat to St. Louis, and overland to Rolla, Pilot Knob, St.Genevieve, and other points in that region. Further movements took him by boat down the Mississippi to Vicksburg and after its fall to New Orleans; as far west as New Iberia, returning by boat to the mouth of the Rio Grande, up the coast as far as Indianola, and back by sea to New Orleans. He then went up the Mississippi and Red rivers as far as Alexandria, but was soon on his way to the easter war area, passing down the Mississippi, through the Gulf, and along the Atlantic coast to the Shenandoah Valley, stopping at Fortress Monroe and Washington."
