Edvige Salvi nacque aÂGorizia nel 1858 e mori' a Tregnago nel 1937. "Compi' la sua prima istruzione privatamente; riconosciutale dagli insegnanti una particolare attitudine alle lettere, studio' iÂclassici. Trascorse parte della sua vita a Torino, a Firenze, a Verona. Dal 1919 al 1929 insegno' aÂMilano. Contribui' alla campagna per la difesa dei boschi, con solerte collaborazione al periodico "Il bosco" e con un libro intitolato "Silvestri colloqui"; diede alla letteratura amena romanzi e novelle, ai fanciulli libri educativi." (Cfr. M. Ferrari Bandini Buti, "Poetesse e scrittrici", vol. 2, 1941, p. 206). La scrittrice qui racconta di essere arrivata in treno a Gavorrano, poi gli spostamenti a Manciano, Pitigliano, Sorano, Roccastrada, Castiglione della Pescaia, definito "di gran lunga piu' povero", antico castello "infestato dalla malaria.". Poi Grosseto, citta' capoluogo, "ben fabbricata e difesa da una rocca con sei bastioni intorno al giro esagono delle sue mura. ha commercio avviatissimo di cereali, bestiami, lane, formaggi e dei prodotti speciali della Maremma", poi Magliano, Orbetello, Talamone. Seguono un breve capitolo sulla storia etrusca,Âil successivo sulle miniere (Montemassi, le miniere di rame della Fenice Massetana, di Capanne vecchie e di Boccheggiano, i giacimenti di antimonio a Pereta e Monte Acuto, di mercurio a Santa Fiora, di manganese presso Arcidosso, ecc.).
