This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Nigella sativa L. has industrial, herbal, cosmetic and pharmaceutical uses but has not been adequately characterized for its morpho-physiological traits and yield potential. Considering this a study was designed to conduct field trials on 32 Nigella sativa L. accessions to evaluate and characterize morpho-physiological differences among various accessions, to quantify and compare intra-accession diversity and also to determine relationships among various morpho-physiological traits. Efforts made at such characterization would be helpful in the development of improved accessions. High genetic variation was observed in days to first flower, days to 50% flowers, days to maturity, flowering duration, plant height, biomass, number of branches, number of capsules, root length, 1000 seed weight, grain yield and harvest index indicating the worth of material evaluated. Coefficient of correlation revealed grain yield significantly correlated with plant height during 2003 and 2004 while biomass was significant throughout three years. It can be high if the number of samples or population size increases. Molecular markers like PCR-RAPD technology is considered as a useful tool to detect genetic variation at the DNA level and tagging accessions for specific traits. Accession specific bands were observed for individual primers and in combination of various primers that could help in resolving genetic diversity and linkage with other traits. Based on 249 RAPD markers generated by 15 primers, some primers revealed characteristics fragments and the level of polymorphism (66%) varied with different accessions. Results suggested that Nigella sativa L. seed/oil deserve further consideration and investigation as a potential new multipurpose crop for industrial, cosmetic and pharmaceutical uses.…

The generic lines were identified that have the potential to be used in future hybridization and breeding programmes to develop high oil as well as rich nutrient lines. The results revealed that Nigella sativa L. needs further consideration as potential constant source of herbal, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Oil extracted by CM 2:1 (24-37%) was of the highest quantity as compared to n-hexane (18-35%) and CM 1:3 (18-34%). Quantification of fatty acid profile showed that the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids were high as compared to monounsaturated fatty acids. Coefficient of correlation revealed that stearic acid and palmitic acid were positively correlated, as well as stearic and linoleic acid.
