Elle part donc à l'Assemblée avec ses deux enfants, le comte de Paris et le duc de Chartres, et son beau-frère, le duc de Nemours, pour faire proclamer l'aîné roi des Français. Conscient de son impopularité, Louis d'Orléans, duc de Nemours, est alors prêt à renoncer au profit de sa belle-sur au titre de régent que la loi de 1842 lui octroie. Mais la tentative de la duchesse d'Orléans est un échec et l'assemblée proclame la république. Hélène de Mecklembourg-Schwerin gagne alors l'Allemagne avec ses enfants et commence une longue période d'errance.
