The volume contains a total of 100 letters. Sixteen of these were written by others: three by Nebridius, five by Paulinus of Nola, five by Jerome of Bethlehem, one by Nectarius, a citizen of Calama in Numidia, one by Maximus of Madaura, and one by Publicola, a Catholic lay man and Roman senator. One Letter was written by Paulinus of Nola to Romanian, Augustine's wealthy patron, on the occasion of Augustine's being ordained coadjutor bishop of Hippo.
