The text, considered a masterpiece of Old Russian literature, is "an account of the unsuccessful campaign in 1185 of Prince Igor of Novgorod-Seversky against the Polovtsy (Kipchak, or Cumans). As in the great French epic The Song of Roland, Igor's heroic pride draws him into a combat in which the odds are too great for him. Though defeated, Igor escapes his captors and returns to his people. The tale was written anonymously (118587) and preserved in a single manuscript, which was discovered in 1795 by A.I. Musin-Pushkin, published in 1800, and lost during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812" (Britannica).…

A magnificent edition of the epic poem 'The Tale of Igor's Campaign' sumptuously bound and illustrated with designs after the Palekh artist Ivan Golikov (1887-1937). Written in the Old East Slavic language in the late twelfth century, the poem describes a failed raid made in year 1185 by Kniaz Igor Svyatoslavich, Prince of Novgorod-Seversk, on the Polovtsians living along the lower Don. Based around the themes of Slavic patriotism, homeland, the co-existence of Christianity and ancient Slavic religion, and the power and role of nature in shaping human lives, the work takes the form of a national epic, emphasising the unity of the peoples of the region, incorporating numerous notable Rus' historical figures. Ivan Golikov was a key figure in the development of the Russian art of Palekh miniature painting, originally a folk handicraft drawing upon the tradition of icon painting, in which miniature paintings were executed using tempera paints on varnished/lacquered items made of papier-mâché (such as small boxes, powder cases, and other luxury items).
