He takes us further afield, and further back in time, to Nuu-Chah-Nulth hostage John Jewitt. He even takes us to another country -- although of the Pig War had been settled in our favour. SanJuan Island would have been part of Canada. Ruttan does not shy away from the ugly past, either, telling stories of the leper colony on D'Arcy Island and the racist policies of early bureaucrat Joseph Trutch.
