Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Apostle Spoons' is an authoritative exploration of one of the most distinct and culturally rich categories of antique silverware. These spoons, often produced in sets of twelve or thirteen, are characterized by handles topped with finely sculpted figures representing the Apostles and, occasionally, the Master. They stand as remarkable examples of the intersection between religious iconography, fine craftsmanship, and social customs in Europe, specifically within England from the late 15th to the 17th centuries.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. A clean, well-preserved First Edition of Charles G. Rupert's foundational study of Apostle spoons - an essential reference for collectors, museum professionals, and scholars of early silver. Rupert traces the evolution of Apostle spoons from medieval prototypes through Tudor and Stuart forms, examining emblematic language, iconography, and the symbolic traditions that guided silversmiths' designs. His research draws on surviving sets, isolated spoons, archival records, and assistance from major institutions including the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and Goldsmiths' Hall. Illustrated throughout with detailed photographic plates, the volume documents Saints' emblems, rare knops, and significant historical sets, concluding with an early assessment of market values and collecting practices. This copy is Near Fine, with strong, square binding, clean pages, and no markings. Navy cloth boards are bright with only the faintest rubbing; endpapers show uniform offsetting typical of the period but remain clean and intact. A superior example of this increasingly scarce early silver reference, produced for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and printed by Oxford University Press at a notably high standard. Charles G. Rupert was an American scholar and collector based near Wilmington, Delaware, specializing in the history, symbolism, and typological evolution of Apostle spoons. Working in close collaboration with museums, curators, and major collectors - including the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and J. P. Morgan - Rupert compiled one of the earliest systematic surveys of surviving spoons, emblem traditions, and maker practices. His work remains a touchstone for collectors and historians of ecclesiastical and domestic silver.…

Hardcover. Condition: g- to vg. First edition. Quarto. xi, 36 (1)pp., xxiii plates with tissue guards. Original printed tan dustjacket over blue cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine, in glassine dustjacket. Frontispiece collotype. "In collecting and studying Apostle spoons, the author found the subject enveloped in much uncertainty. No one was quite sure what emblems might have been used by the early silversmiths for some of the Apostles, and no two writers were agreed as to what had been for most of them. The identification, therefore, of these spoons has, with the information available, been in some cases difficult and in others impossible. The decoration of the spoon from remote antiquity has been closely linked with symbolism, and when the ornamental knop reached its highest development in the Apostle spoon, the emblems of the Saints became as important a feature of the silversmiths' art as they had been of the painter." (Author). Includes chapters on the spoon and its ornamentation through the ages, sets of Apostle Spoons, consisting of six or more Spoons of the same date and by the same maker, the emblems given to the Savior and the Apostles, with brief chapters on the Apostles' Creed, collecting Apostle spoons and the market value of Apostle spoons. Illustrated with twenty-three plates of collotypes depicting Apostle spoons and their characteristics. Letterpress and collotypes printed in England at the University Press Oxford John Johnson Printer to the University. Taped to the inside back cover a letter from I. D. They stand as remarkable examples of the intersection between religious iconography, fine craftsmanship, and social customs in Europe, specifically within England from the late 15th to the 17th centuries. The work by Charles G. By analyzing the various sets that have endured, the text provides essential knowledge on identifying authentic pieces through their hallmarks and artistic features.
