Published the year Washington Territory transitioned to statehood, Ruffner underscores the importance of railroad development as portending the region's vast economic growth.Per Tweney, Ruffner spent five weeks exploring the territory. His notes on the advantages of the territory's wheat, for instance, stressing its quality advantages over California wheat, indicate existing exports to Liverpool as a sign of huge potential. A prescient assessment, perhaps only improved if Ruffner's crystal ball realized Weyerhaeuser, Simpson, Gates, and Bezos. SMITH, 8839. SOLIDAY I, 1481. TWENEY, 68.
