Lo enviaron a estudiar a Inglaterra a la edad de 6 años y más tarde ingresó al United Service College, una escuela en Devonshire, para educar a los hijos de oficiales sin recursos. Más adelante su padre le consiguió un empleo en Pakistán, como Director de la Colección Nacional de Arte de Lahore, el cual aceptó. Luego viajó a Bombay y vivió durante algún tiempo en la India. Viajó por casi todo el mundo, recorriendo Asia, África, Australia y Estados Unidos y finalmente volvió a Inglaterra, donde fue reconocido como escritor prolífico y popular. Durante su primera estancia en Londres, varias historias de Kipling fueron publicadas en revistas londinenses, aunque sus obras más destacadas, estaban ambientadas principalmente en los territorios de la India y de Birmania, cuando pertenecían al Imperio británico. Fue un respetado poeta y se le ofreció el premio nacional de poesía que rechazó y también el título de Sir de la "Order of the British Empire", que rechazó hasta en tres ocasiones. Obtuvo el Premio Nobel de Literatura, que si aceptó, siendo el autor más joven al que se lo concedieron hasta la fecha, y el primer escritor británico en recibirlo. Fue iniciado en la masonería a los veinte años, en la logia "Esperanza y Perseverancia Nº 782" de Lahore, Punjab, India. Algunas de sus obras más conocidas son los relatos: "El libro de la selva", la novela "Kim", el relato breve "El hombre que pudo ser rey", y el poema "Si".
