Condition: Very good. - Quarto [approximately 13-1/2 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide], light tan buckram titled in maroon on the spine with an illustration stamped in maroon on the front cover. The binding is bumped with the top corner of the front cover frayed & chipped. The edges of the covers are slightly darkened & the joints are stained. 267 & [1] pages plus colophon. 268 photographic illustrations in color and black & white. The page corners are lightly bumped with creasing to the top corners of 3 leaves, else the contents are very good. First edition.Laid in is a 16-page booklet listing the illustrations in Czech, Russian, German and English. The lengthy introduction by Rudolf Fabry and the picture captions in the book are in Czech.

Rudolf Fabry (1915-1982) was a poet and surrealist artist, the first to be acknowledged in Slovakia and one of the most significant in both fields. The present work was the first surrealist novel in Slovak and it also is rated the author s most important in terms of form and content. It has been reprinted in postwar editions in different formats. This first edition is uncommon on the market; Worldcat indicates it is held by two institutions worldwide (UCLA, BL).
