Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition First Printing. Provides an historical overview of scouting for girls in Norway, with black-and-white photos of individual women who played key roles in the organization, as well as photos of scouts themselves engaged in various activities in diverse settings: camping, hiking, civic work, parades, international collaborative ventures. Also includes a summary of the Scout's purpose, motto, flag, uniform changes, etc. Published in 1946,1) Norsk Speiderpikeforbund is a small 4to in 129 pp. In Norwegian. 2) Norges KFUK Speidere: En Gang-Alltid 1920-1950/Norway's YWCA Scouts: Once-Always 1920-1950 is an 8vo in 39 pp. In Norwegian. Off-white wrappers, with a cover image of a globe on which two girls are raising the flags of Norway & the scouts atop a globe on which are emblazoned the mottos: For lykka i landet (For the Happiness of the Land)/For fred i verdan (For peace in the world). Stapled binding, 39 pages, full of black-and-white photo reproductions & tributes from current & former leaders, including articles by founder Margrethe Parm (1882-1966), a Norwegian Christian leader, teacher, scout leader and prison director. Both books include a tribute to Robert Baron Baden-Powell, who, with his sister Agnes, started the Girl Guide and Girl Scout organizations in London, 1909-1910. In 1912, Baden-Powell launched a world tour with a voyage to the Caribbean, at which time he met another passenger, Juliette Gordon Low, an American who had been running a Guide Company in Scotland, and was returning to the US. Baden-Powell encouraged her to found the Girl Scouts of the USA, & the rest is history. Meanwhile, Margrethe Parm was founding a Scouts program for girls within Norway's YWCA in 1920. A crisis confronted all such groups in Norway during the WWII German occupation, when all forms of scouting were banned as being both a threat to Hitler Youth groups, & a potential source of resistance work--scouts were perceived to have "both international ties & militarily useful skills." All "funds, equipment, banners and even uniform details were to be turned over to authorities. Scout leaders spirited away what they could," but many groups lost everything. After the war, scouting was quickly taken up again. In 2003, Norway created a national scouting & guiding federation under one umbrella (Speidernes Fellesorganisasjon), uniting Norges Speiderforbund (Norwegian Guide and Scout Association) & Norges KFUK-KFUM-speidere (YWCA-YMCA Guides and Scouts of Norway). Both books are VG, with mild edgewear, tanning. Norsk Speiderpikeforbund shows foxing to front matter & both covers. Pages white & unmarked. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Collection of thirteen previously published essays. "The reprinted essays remain unrevised in substance, although typographical and other small errors have been silently emended in accordance, where possible, with annotations in the author's own copies."--Acknowledgements, p. [15]. Description: 314 pages : illustrations ; 25 cm. "With passionate energy and great learning these essays expound the poetics, and explore the practice, of Renaissance and early modern writers who structured their work in ways that reflect the divine order then regularly attributed to the text of the Bible, to a God created universe, and to a providential conception of history. Maren-Sofie Røstvig (1920-2014) demonstrates how literary structure was perceived as not just the business of organizing material in craftsman-like fashion, but as a vital component of meaning that requires and repays our closest attention. The thirteen challenging and pioneering publications conveniently reprinted here have been gathered from a wide variety of sources, some of which are not readily found even in major libraries. All the chosen items come from the final thirty years of the authors productive career when her thinking was at its most developed. The volume is supplemented by a full list of Røstvigs many publications, and by an overview of her life in scholarship."--Back of dust jacket.
