Rost was a Dutch survivor of Dachau who became a post-war expert on the camp.A brief history and description of the first concentration camp set up by the Nazi regime in Germ…any, originally for political opponents it later included Russian POW's and French resistance workers, with reprints of some SS documents concerning the camp, Dachau concentration camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany, intended to hold political prisoners. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory northeast of the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km (10 mi) northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany. Opened in 1933 by Heinrich Himmler, its purpose was enlarged to include forced labor, and eventually, the imprisonment of Jews, German and Austrian criminals, and eventually foreign nationals from countries that Germany occupied or invaded. The Dachau camp system grew to include nearly 100 sub-camps, which were mostly work camps or Arbeitskommandos, and were located throughout southern Germany and Austria. The camps were liberated by U.S. forces on 29 April 1945. Prisoners lived in constant fear of brutal treatment and terror detention including standing cells, floggings, the so-called tree or pole hanging, and standing at attention for extremely long periods. There were 32,000 documented deaths at the camp, and thousands that are undocumented. Approximately 10,000 of the 30,000 prisoners were sick at the time of liberation. In the postwar years the Dachau facility served to hold SS soldiers awaiting trial. After 1948, it held ethnic Germans who had been expelled from eastern Europe and were awaiting resettlement, and also was used for a time as a United States military base during the occupation. It was finally closed in 1960. There are several religious memorials within the Memorial Site, which is open to the public.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Abnutzung / Risse - leicht.

Contact seller4-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 4th Edition. Concentration Camp Dachau - Nico Rost - 4th Edition - Comité International de Dachau - Brussels - 1945 Original historical booklet titled Concentration Camp Dachau written by Nico Rost, a Dutch writer and former prisoner of the Dachau concentration camp. This copy is the 4th e…dition, published in Brussels, Belgium by the Comité International de Dachau, an organization formed by former prisoners shortly after the liberation of the camp at the end of World War II. Published in 1945, this early post-war account provides a concise historical overview of the Dachau concentration camp, the first concentration camp established by the Nazi regime in 1933. The booklet describes the history and operation of the camp and reflects the perspective of those who endured imprisonment there during the war. As one of the earliest publications produced by survivors following liberation, it represents an important piece of historical documentation. This softcover booklet is approximately 35 pages in length and bears a "Museum Dachau" stamp on the inside cover, suggesting it was at some point distributed through or associated with the Dachau Memorial Museum. Condition: The booklet is in good condition for its age. The cover shows some staining and has an embossed stamp with the former owner's name. There is a tear along the spine on the lower half of the booklet, though the front and rear covers remain attached. The photographic section in the center of the booklet has come loose from the binding but is present and could be easily reattached with stapling if desired. Overall, it remains in good shape for a clearly used booklet that is nearly a century old and retains its historical integrity. A significant and early publication documenting the history of Dachau and the experiences of those imprisoned there in the immediate aftermath of World War II. PM "R"ost.

Add to basket8°. 313 SS., 1 Bl. OPp.
