Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive academic study of French and Swiss folk songs with a particular focus on analyzing their socio-historical context. After an introduction by Jean Roux, the volume begins with the first part of Arthur Rossat's "Chansons Populaires Recueillies Dans La Suisse Romande", originally published in 1917. Rossat's collection, published posthumously, drew on archival research and fieldwork. This first volume contains sections on traditional songs from various holidays (including Christmas, May, New Year, and the Epiphany), followed by "songs of the life of Jesus, the Virgin and the Saints", a section on complaints and finally a selection of convent songs. The author's focus is on tracing the historical evolution of the songs and on contextualizing them in their time and place. He discusses their literary and musical connections to other cultural forms, such as theater, liturgy, dance, and medieval poetry. In the process, this book illuminates the social and religious history of an entire region over many centuries. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
