Contact seller5-star seller8vo. publisher's cloth, gilt titling on spine. viii, 239 pages. With Introduction and Notes by Sir Thomas L. Heath. First edition designed by Bruce Rogers and printed by J.B. Peace, M.A., at the University Press. Private ownership inscription in ink on the recto of the front free endpaper of 'J. W. Roberts 13-xii-51'. Small book…seller's ticket of Foyles on the front pastedown. Spine heavily faded, spine ends and hinges lightly rubbed, very minor spotting to boards, very light foxing to endsheets, previous owner's annotations in blue ink for the first 39 pages, else a near fine copy of this very scarce Bruce Rogers production. According to Bruce Rogers in a talk at The Grolier Club on the occasion of the comprehensive exhibit of his work in 1939, Rogers himself stated that this book, and 29 other titles, were, in his opinion, considered commercial success (Paragraphs on Printing, page 119). Other books included on the list were his The Song of Roland (1906), Dürer's The Just Shaping of Letters (1917), Tory's Champ Fleury (1927), The Odyssey of Homer (1932), Fra Luca de Pacioli (1933), and perhaps his most famed book The Lectern Bible (1935). The typography is by the notable American book designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957), who "was appreciated in his lifetime. In addition to several honorary degrees, in 1948 he was awarded a gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for distinction in the graphic arts. Over decades of accomplishment in which he designed approximately 500 books. Rogers literally defined the profession of book designing in the United States" (ANB). Francis Meynell stated that Rogers was, "the greatest artificer of the book who ever lived." publisher's cloth, gilt titling on spine. Rogers, Bruce (illustrator).
