Si le village c…onserve quelques uns de ses traits traditionnels, ce ne seront que les plus superficiels, comportement de sociabilité ou valeurs idéologiques, par exemple. Susan Carol Rogers esquisse une alternative. Si les femmes conservent leurs valeurs et leur genre de vie, elles conserveront aussi leur pouvoir sur le domestique, et par là renforceront leur rôle dans le village. Si au contraire elles adoptent les comportements et les valeurs dominantes de la société englobante, elles perdront leur pouvoir et contribueront à la modification radicale de la société villageoise qui se fondra, avec des nuances minimes, dans une société française homogène. Quant à Claude Karnoouh, instruit par l'histoire qui lui montre la continuité du village à travers ses avatars, il pense qu'une société est avant tout un système d'acteurs et la représentation que les acteurs ont de leur système et d'eux-mêmes. Selon lui ce système et cette représentation peuvent survivre aux changements actuels, les assimiler, les acclimater, les naturaliser en quelque sorte, et ainsi se perpétuer grâce à ces changements. Trois théories de la société - et elles peuvent se lire dans l'ordre qui plaira au lecteur - s'affrontent ainsi à propos de ce modeste village auquel elles prédisent des avenirs différents. Les villageois auront malgré tout le dernier mot, et sans doute inventeront-ils leur avenir d'une manière encore différente. Voir sommaire sur photos jointes.
