Societe des Antiquaires de Picardie, Amiens 1978 First Edition 516pp Illustrated Hardback. This fine copy is bound in orange cloth covered boards with blac…k titling to the spine and the upper board. There is a small neat inscription to the f.e.p. The unmarked text block is bright, white, tight and square. The unclipped dust wrapper has some light sunning to the front panel but is still in near fine condition. Laid in are two large scale maps of the area and a series of six full colour post cards of aerial photographs of specific remains. The northern region of Picardy stretches from the Somme in the west to the Belgium border in the east. Much of the region suffered greatly in the first World War, most notably in the Somme Battlefields and numerous châteaux in the more mountainous Aisne. The city of Amiens has an extensive and significant history that starts in the early Stone Age. The departments in Picardy are: Aisne, Oise, Somme. The Somme will always be inextricably linked with the battles of the First World war but, as this book admirably illustrates, the region is of especial archaeological interest due to the discovery of pre-Roman and Roman settlements the extent of which were revealed for the first time with the the author's pioneering use of aerial photography. Roger Agache (August 16, 1926 - September 17, 2011) was a French archaeologist. He was among the first to take part in aerial archaeology in France, and helped to develop a methodology for aerial prospecting. Ref CCC1.
