By exploring the encounter between reform communists and human rights, the authors reconstruct the metamorphosis and the end of communism within the context of the wider transformations taking place in European political cultures at the end of the Cold War. A una politica… bipolare aggressiva si sostituì gradualmente una nuova forma di competizione tra sistemi, nella quale l'Italia tentò di ritagliarsi spazi di azione "originali", che rispondevano all'ambizione di giocare un ruolo di mediazione nelle relazioni tra Est e Ovest. La presenza di un grande partito comunista, l'eccellenza del made in Italy e la preparazione alla formula del centro-sinistra sin dalla metà degli anni Cinquanta suscitarono le attenzioni del Cremlino e innescarono nuove dinamiche nelle relazioni bilaterali. Maturò così un fitto intreccio di rapporti fra dirigenti sovietici Chrucëv, Gromyko, Brenev, Kosygin, Suslov e i protagonisti politici italiani del tempo: Gronchi, Fanfani, Moro, Togliatti, Berlinguer.
