Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the proposed improvement of the Ohio River, a vital inland waterway for transporting both passengers and goods. The author, an experienced civil engineer, presents a critical examination of the various plans put forth to address the river's declining navigability due to irregular water levels. The author examines the strengths and weaknesses of each proposal, including the construction of locks and dams, the creation of large reservoirs to regulate water flow, and the construction of a series of low dams without locks. Through a detailed analysis of the engineering challenges and practical considerations involved, the book offers insights into the complexities of maintaining and improving such a critical infrastructure project, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic, environmental, and social factors in decision-making. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This issue includes articles on The World's Highest Altitudes and First Ascents by Charles E. Fay (with 25 illustrations), A Wonderland of Glaciers and Snow by Milnor Roberts (with 8 illustrations), The Highest Point in Each State, Brittany, The Lad of the Sardine by Hugh H. Smith (with 24 illustrations) [from an Address to the National Geographic Society, March 26, 1909], When our Country is Fifty Years Older by Raphael Zon (illustrated), [abstracted from The future Use of Land in the United States, Forest Service bulletin 159], The National Geographic Expedition to Alaska, and Wonderful Scenes in India.
