Die Wissenschaft hat sich bisher allenfalls mit Teilaspekten dieses Phänomens auseinandergesetzt. Externe werden im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit als im und für das Unternehmen tätige Personen verstanden, die mit diesem keinen Arbeitsvertrag abschließen, sondern überwiegend über Werk- und Dienstverträge beschäftigt werden. Ihr Einsatz wird vor allem bezüglich zweier besonders praxisrelevant erscheinender Aspekte betrachtet: der Entscheidung über den Einsatz als Alternative zu Eigenerstellung und Fremdbezug und dem Management des Einsatzes.Die Entscheidung stellt sich dabei als klassisches Make or Buy Problem dar. Die Literatur schlägt verschiedene Ansätze zur Lösung solcher Probleme vor. Beispiele sind zum einen der Vergleich interner und externer Produktionskosten als eher klassische Herangehensweise und zum anderen der Vergleich der Transaktionskosten der Alternativen. Keiner der beiden Ansätze berücksichtigt alleine jedoch alle wesentlich erscheinenden Entscheidungskriterien. So wird das Rahmenkonzept von Kehrer/Schade (1995) als drittes Verfahren beschrieben. Dieses erscheint umfassender angelegt und greift Ansätze der beiden zuvor beschriebenen Konzepte auf. Ergänzt um weitere relevante Entscheidungskriterien scheint damit eine fundierte und alle wesentlichen Aspekte berücksichtigende Entscheidung für oder wider den Einsatz von Externen möglich.Des weiteren werden Grundzüge eines Managements des Einsatzes von Externen beschrieben. Oberziel dieses Managements soll dabei die Maximierung des Nutzens aus dem Einsatz Externer sein. Dieses Ziel lässt sich formal systematisieren. An der Systematisierung ansetzend können Anregungen für grundlegende Strategien der Nutzenmaximierung gegeben werden. Wesentliche Rahmenbedingungen für das Management ergeben sich zum einen aus den Eigenschaften des typischen Externen, zum anderen aus wesentlichen Merkmalen der von den Externen zu erbringenden Leistungen, die als sog. Kontraktgüter beschrieben werden. Von zentraler Bedeutung ist daneben die Beziehung zwischen Externem und Unternehmen. Diese wird als Prinzipal-Agent-Problem modelliert. Risiken, die sich für das Unternehmen in einer solchen Beziehung aufgrund von Informationsasymmetrien ergeben, werden aufgegriffen und in einem letzten Schritt Managementmaßnahmen, die an ihrer Antizipation ansetzen, identifiziert.Die wesentliche Erkenntnis der vorliegenden Arbeit kann darin gesehen werden, dass der Einsatz von Externen eine Herausforderung für die Unternehmensführung darstellt, zunächst Risiken und Chancen richtig einzuschätzen und den Einsatz dann nutzenoptimierend abzuwickeln.
