Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the experiences of highly educated Hindu individuals seeking truth and spiritual enlightenment in 19th-century colonial Calcutta, and the effects their conversion to Christianity had on their lives. The author, a missionary, was able to reach these men through educational institutions and in public settings. Through interviews and Bible study, the men were given the opportunity to hear the Christian message and discuss their doubts and objections. The author acknowledges that obstacles to conversion were significant but possible to overcome. He sees the progress and struggles of these individuals as a testament to the transformative power of Christianity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Contact seller5-star sellerLahore: Civil and Military Gazette Press, 1895. First edition. vi, 76 pages. Original publisher's green cloth. A very good copy. "Printed for private circulation." A religious missionary-based text with a curious 2-page Appendix. The latter text attempts to demonstrate the immorality of Hinduism by noting that a Dr. A.W. Hitt had treated in 1894 numerous "Brahmans" who either had syphilis or other "diseases consequent upon immorality." This is follow by a rather mind-numbing statistical analysis and enumeration of wives amongst "618 bigamists and 520 polygamists." This theme of immorality is found throughout, e.g. "To remain a Hindu means the gratification of every lust, and the satisfying of every appetite. Even relatives and friends fan the flames of passion and allure into sin." (p48, pointing the Reader to the Appendix) Robert Parmelee Wilder (18631898) was a Protestant missionary born in Kolhapur, India and educated at Princeton and then at Union Seminary. Afterwards, he was was appointed by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions for student work in India. Wilder has been described as one of the pioneers in the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions which enthusiastically evangelized American Protestant belief worldwide. (Patterson, The Legacy of Robert P. Wilder online).…
