Hard Bound. Condition: Good. Quarter leather and marbled paper-covered boards. vii, 499 pp. Two short tears at head of spine, some leather scuffing, paper-covered boards rubbed, long notation in ink by previous owner Jonathan Holden (later changed his name to Holdeen), Good Plus. Jonathan Holdeen (1881-1967), who resided in Pine Plains and had an office in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., was the eccentric, penny-pinching, millionaire lawyer who set up 2.8 million dollars in trusts to make Pennsylvania a tax-free state (an idea inspired by Benjamin Franklin). An extraordinary legal clash followed in which the Unitarian Universalists were involved. Google Holdeen, and read about this fascinating scheme and legal battle.

Contemporary red cloth; strong mottling to boards; spine ends frayed with multiple surface abrasions to faded cloth lengthwise exposing underlying paper back-strip; associated losses to spine's gilt stamping so that it is now difficult to discern. Some toning, soiling, and staining to edges; light moisture staining to early and late leaves; strong toning to ffep's verso, front flyleaf, rear flyleaf, and rfep's recto; strong foxing to frontispiece's blank recto; frontispiece's tissue guard well toned; mostly occasional light foxing to interior pages with a few scattered stains. With publisher's four page advertising section at rear. Late 19th century green ownership label of "D.M. Montgomery" [Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, Alabama merchant and Civil War veteran David Milton Montgomery, 1841-1899] at center of front pastedown with his pencil signature on opposing front free endpaper recto. Binding is still firm. Double-column text. A good copy. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which modestly enhances exterior appearance and shelf presence.
