Joseph Gies was an editor, author and co-author of 20 books as well as many articles and short stories. As a child he was befriended by ex-Detroit Tiger outfielder Davey Jones, who inspired his love of baseball. After graduation from the University of Michigan in 1939, he went to New York in search of an editorial job, editing a Latin-American trade paper and reading scripts for 20th Century-Fox's New York story department, and eventually becoming an editor of This Week Magazine, the Sunday supplement, where he remained for 23 years. During World War II, he served with the 42nd Division in France and Germany and was present at the liberation of Dachau. When the European war ended, he worked for Yank in Paris and later Stars and Stripes in New York. In 1965, he left This Week to become an editor at Doubleday & Co., where he wrote biographies. At the same time he began a collaboration with his wife, Frances Gies, with Life in a Medieval City, published in 1969, the first in a series of nine books on medieval social history, eight of which are still in print. Moving to Chicago in 1967, he became senior editor/technology for a revision of Encyclopedia Britannica that was completed in 1974. He moved again in 1974, to Washington, D.C., where he was named editor for the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Until From 1884 to 1890, the National League and the American Association faced each other in a series of games at the end of the season to determine an overall champion. These series were disorganized in comparison to the modern World Series, with the terms arranged through negotiation of the owners of the championship teams beforehand. The number of games played ranged from as few as three in 1884 (Providence defeated New York three games to zero), to a high of fifteen in 1887 (Detroit beat St. Louis ten games to five).
