Medieval charters were often very detailed and could run to great length, and these abstracts provide the essential elements of legal documents which recorded property transactions, rentals and other rights and obligations of townsfolk. They were kept by the town clerk and give an unprecedented insight into the daily lives of people at that time. The protocols give an insight into a wide range of matters. They list the names, occupations and family relationships of hundreds of Glasgow citizens during the period. They describe property transferred by sale, inheritance or other conveyance. They record the names of many streets and smaller lanes which were later lost during the development of the city. The abstract calendar is a valuable resource for family historians, placename scholars, economic and social historians and local historians.
