The Amahuaca are a Panoan-speaking Indians of the Peruvian Montana. The Amahuaca dwell near the remonte and seldom-visited upper reaches of t…he Inuya, Sepahua, Purus and Yuua. Their habitat is an extensive region of rugged terrain covered with dense tropical rain forest lying near the Brazilian border. No Amahuaca supernatural being is powerful or exalted enough to merit being called a god. The Amahuaca tell of a rather important culture hero, Rantanka, who taught them how to plant, how to hunt, how to make some axes and so forth, but he no longer plays a role in their lives, and in fact most informants say he is dead. In this paper the author describes the aspect of dealing with spirit beliefs. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, spine sunned, small tear at spine heal else very good.

I…nstead, it is argued that civilization was an organizational solution to specific social and ecological problems. Even where technology gave an impetus to the rise of civilization, it can be shown that the tools or weapons involved were themselves developed in response to societal demands. Thus, the invention of the steam engine, which led to the Industrial Revolution, can be traced back to the need by feudal states in Europe to cope with a severe shortage of labor. This interpretation is presented, not as a repudiation of cultural materialism, but as an elaboration on it.
