Unit history: In 1888 the Fifth Iowa Regiment of Infantry was merged with the Third Iowa Infantry and the whole became the Third Iowa. In 1917, the Third Iowa Infantry was selected to be part of the 42nd or Rainbow Division and became known as the 168th Iowa Infantry". This is the full editionl, not the more common abbreviated. Some light wear, but a remarkably nice copy.

First edition of this exceptionally scarce World War I regimental memorial volume, documenting the service and sacrifice of the 168th Infantry Regiment (Rainbow Division) during the Great War. Very Good overall, internally excellent. Complete and collated through page 420, including all photographic plates and etchings as issued. Original publisher's cloth boards, lightly scuffed consistent with age. Front and rear bottom board corners rubbed with minor exposure at the tips. Front and rear hinges weakened but intact; binding remains sound with no loose pages. Spine and text block solid. Interior exceptionally clean: pages bright, tight, and well-preserved with no staining, foxing, or tears observed. All photographic plates present, including those issued with "Photograph Unobtainable" captions. No restorations, no repairs, and no evidence of rebacking. A well-preserved, honest copy showing limited external wear but retaining strong structural integrity and excellent internal condition.

Softcover. Condition: Acceptable. Dust Jacket Condition: in illustrated wraps. Vintage Scarce Softcover, Stated Abbreviated Edition 1920 American Lithographing and Print. Co., Des Moines, Iowa 79 pages. Acceptable, in illustrated wraps. Major shelf/edge wear, chipping, small closed tears and large creases to covers and book. The creases are a result of the book being folded lengthwise at one time. (probably to fit into a pocket) The creasing goes all the way through the book. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean but a few have some handwritten notes in them. This is a Stated Abbreviated Edition which is VERY SCARCE. There is only one (full size) edition with 417 pages for sale online. The Abbreviated Edition is only available in libraries and was probably used to promote the full size edition back in the day. An acceptable copy that has seen much use and wear but is still intact and readable. LOC SSM-08.
