Le projet de ce volume consiste dans l'etude du fait religieux sous l'aspect d'un phenomene recurrent au cours de trois millenaires et dont le processus est identifie par trois mots significatifs: crise, rupture, mutation. Les auteurs abordent la crise du sacre, non pas sou…s l'aspect sociologique mais dans la perspective de l'homme, homo religiosus. Un premier volet analyse le phenomene dans plusieurs grandes traditions antiques: bouddhisme (Pierre Massein); confucianisme (Anne Cheng); orphisme (Dario Cosi); manicheisme (Julien Ries). A l'origine de chacune de ces quatre nouvelles orientations religieuses se trouve une contestation d'une longue tradition qui va aboutir a une rupture ainsi qu'a une mutation en profondeur de l'horizon du croyant. Le bouddhisme et le confucianisme se situent dans la mouvance de deux grandes pensees religieuses, a savoir celle de l'Inde vedique et brahmanique et celle de l'ancienne religion de la Chine - par contre, l'orphisme et le manicheisme naissent respectivement en Grece et dans le Proche Orient. Le second volet de cette nouvelle recherche en histoire des religions et en anthropologie religieuse est consacre a l'homme moderne occidental dont nous sommes les heritiers. Cet homo religiosus est pris dans le tourbillon de la crise du sacre a la Renaissance puis a l'epoque des "lumieres", l'Aufklarung. Jean-Claude Margolin, grand specialiste de la Renaissance et de l'humanisme nous livre un grand article, tres eclairant: L'homme dans le miroir de l'Humanisme et de la Renaissance. A ce texte succede une etude fouillee: La crise religieuse des "Lumieres" et la secularisation signee par Jean-Pierre Sironneau. Dans le contexte actuel de notre culture occidentale il s'averait necessaire de jeter un regard sur Les ruptures contemporaines et l'avenir du christianisme. Cet article est de la plume d'Olivier Clement, un observateur lucide de la mutation en cours. Julien Ries, l'editeur de ce volume, introduit l'ouvrage par une perspective consacree a cette recherche nouvelle et il termine par une synthese intitulee Mutations et permanence du sacre au cours de trois millenaires d'experiences religieuses.
