La más conocida de las casi ochenta obras que escribió el autor británico Rider haggard es también la primera novela de ficción de aventura situada en África en lengua inglesa. La historia es sencilla: se inicia cuando dos nobles británicos sir Henry Curtis y el capitán John Good, viajan a África en busca del hermano d, perdido mientras pretendía encontrar las fabulosas minas de diamantes del rey Salomón. Para ello contratan a Allan Quatermann, un cazador blanco, que pone voz a relato en primera persona y al propio autor. Las minas del rey Salomón sigue fascinando a los lectores de hoy en día, y ello se debe en gran parte a que Haggard supo conjugar en su obra el sabor clásico de los grandes relatos de aventura con una descripción muy detallada y real de los paisajes y personajes con que se encuentran los protagonistas. Además, el autor dibujo a Quaterman no como el prototipo de héroe, sino como un hombre adulto, con cojera y no excepcionalmente valiente, acercándolo así a todo tipo de lector. Aunque su obra no se libera del todo de los preceptos victorianos, el relato transmite una admiración por las culturas africanas y a pesar del éxito de la empresa de los protagonistas, un tono de derrota y melancolía al asistir al fin de una gran civilización. Haggard's tale occupies only the first 54 pages, with the rest containing twelve stories by the fascinating Lily Curry, a translator [and probable lover] of Jose Marti. Ogilvie was obviously using the more famous Haggard as bait to encourage sales. Maroon cloth binding, decoratively stamped in black; identified as part of the "Home Series." The Title Page also claims " Fireside Series, No. 35. December, 1887." In typical pirate fashion, the texblock is of cheap acidic stock and suffers from tanning and stiffness [it remains perfectly clear]. A previous owner has signed on the Title Page as well as both the front and rear endpapers. The Title Page is loose. Rubbing to the margins and a darkened spine.
