Former owner's name sticker inside front cover. Burgundy calf, with 5 raised ribs on spine. Gilt lettering on spine; gilt decoration around the perimeter of front and back covers. Much shelf wear…on front and back covers and spine. Small pieces of the "top layer" of the front and back covers have been peeled off. Front cover is almost completely loose; it's attached by a thread, literally. Endpapers are marbled. Moderate foxing throughout. Book has 3 parts. Part 1 has 292 pages. Part 2, 142; Part 3, 366. About 10 more unnumbered pages in the back -- for a total of about 810 pages. All pages are present, intact, and tight.

Corners good condition bumped and worn with some loss. Boards good condition quarter leather boards, some loss to the marbled paper to the front board of Vol. II in the bottom left hand corner. Page edges good condition top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges tanned and foxed, some pages are standing proud down the fore edge in both volumes. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition marbled, there is a book plate Talygarn on the front paste down of both volumes. End papers good condition marbled, subsequent end papers tanned and foxed. Title good condition Vol. I has a shield design to the centre, some offsetting from the frontispiece, tanned, Vol. II lightly tanned and foxed. Pages good condition Vol. I has a portrait frontispiece Sir George Pretyman Tomline , loosely inserted newspaper cutting relating to Pitt (William the younger) newspaper cutting The Enthronement Of Bishops Of Winchester together with a Christ At Both Ends Of The Line supplement, tanned and foxed throughout both volumes.
