Page 9 of the biographical notes at the beginning of the book, is detahced from the binding. Front hinge of the book is broken and torn. Back hinge is slightly torn. Boards are rubbed and scuffed. John Mason (1706-1763), nonconformist divine and author, born at Dunmow, Essex, early in 1706 began his training for the ministry under John Jennings but he was only seventeen when Jennings died, and probably completed his studies in London. His first employment was as tutor and chaplain in the family of Governor Feaks, near Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In 1729 he became minister of the presbyterian congregation at Dorking, Surrey. Thence he removed in July 1746 to succeed John Oakes as minister of a congregation at Carbuckle Street (or Crossbrook), Cheshunt, formed by a union in 1733 of presbyterians and independents. He had previously attracted attention by his 'Plea for Christianity,' 1743, and his 'Treatise on Self-Knowledge,' 1745.

John Mason, which he sent to to Several of His Friends, tending to Promote the Power of Godliness, both in Persons and Families. Richard Baxter said, He was the glory of the Church of England. The frame of his spirit was so heavenly, his deportment so humble and obliging, his discourse of spiritual things so weighty, with such apt words and delightful air, that it charmed all that had any spiritual relish. Mason was a Calvinist preacher in the Church of England. VERY GOOD for age. Textblock appears clean. Binding sound but some signatures pulled a bit. Covers bright. Minor edgewear.
