Hardback. Condition: Very Good. J.M.W. Turner, A.W. Calcott, A. Nasymth, Rev. J. Thomson, and others (illustrator). First Edition Thus. 1826. First edition thus - 2 volumes. Engraved title-page (there is no plain title-page but this may be as issued for this edition), list of plates, lii, 96pp. and 21 engraved plates; engraved title-page (no plain title), list of plates, pages 97 to 208 and 29 engraved plates. The two volumes are complete for the total of 52 tissue-guarded listed engravings. Top edges gilt. Sit Walter Scott's 'Provincial Antiquities of Scotland' was originally published in ten parts between 1819 and 1826, before being issued in the present bound form in 1826. After a substantial account of the Regalia of Scotland, the book describes the various antiquities to be found in Scotland, including castles, ruins, tombs, standing stones, and other historical sites. Contents include Crighton Castle, Borthwick Castle, Dalkeith, Edinburgh, Holyrood Chapel, Roslyn Castle, Dunbar, Linlithgow, the Bass Rock, and Leith Harbour. The two volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary marbled paper covered boards with dark green leather corners and spines. Both volumes have fairly recently been rebacked and recased and have new grey endpapers, and as a result are now tight and secure. The cases of the books have expected shelf wear to the boards and the corners are lightly bumped with scuffing and a little damage to the leather on the corner tips. The spines have faded to a brown-green colour and there is wear down the spine edge and to the titling. There is a little damage to the bottom corners of the spine and the top 1" or so of both spines has some damage that has been repaired (probably with Japanese paper). The pages are clean apart from some scattered light foxing that also affects a few of the plates, generally around the margins. The frontispiece plates and the title-pages are a bit more heavily foxed with some light soiling to the title-pages. There is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy set, weighing nearly 3.4 Kg., and extra postage will apply.
