Believed by the publishers to be the seventh edition of the Life of Fraser of Brea. xi, 303pp. Publisher's blue grey cloth with titles to a slightly worn paper label on the spine. The boards and spine are in very good condition. The contents are clean and bright with a previous owner's name to the ffep. James Fraser of Brea (1639-98) was a Covenanter and later the minister in Culross, Fife. He was born on his father's Ross-shire estate at Brea, which he inherited as a child; this was to cause him much legal and financial difficulty. He studied at Marischal College Aberdeen, and after practising law for some years began to preach and was ordained around 1670 by some ejected ministers. Summoned to appear before the Privy Council in July 1674, he refused and was denounced as a rebel . Arrested in 1677, he was imprisoned on the Bass Rock, where he studied Hebrew and Greek, and wrote his work on Justifying Faith. Freed in 1679, he was again arrested in 1681 and confined in Blackness Castle . He was exiled from Scotland on his release six weeks later, and again imprisoned in London. Returning to Scotland in 1687, after the 'Glorious Revolution' he became parish minister in Culross until his death.…

Universal History from the Creation of the World to the Decease of George III, 1820 Vol V Volume 5 of Universal History from the Creation of the World to the Decease of George III, 1820 by Alexander Fraser Tytler, Woodhouselee (Lord Woodhouselee, 1747-1813) and Edward Nares, D.D., was issued by Harper & Brothers, New York, in 1848. It continues the multi-volume world-history work that Tytler began (originally Elements of General History, Ancient and Modern) and that Nares carried forward to the death of George III in 1820; the Harper edition was an American revision "edited by an American" gentleman. The content of Volume V falls in the early modern period. A prominent passage from the volume (p. 182) discusses the English constitution — specifically the tension between the hereditary Lords and the elective Commons, and the tendency of the crown to influence the upper house. This places the volume squarely in the era of English constitutional development, likely spanning roughly the late medieval / Renaissance period through the early Stuart era (Reformation, rise of nation-states, parliamentary growth). The 1848 Harper & Brothers (New York) edition was issued as part of Harper's Family Library (issues 86-91), a cheaply priced, uniformly bound non-fiction series, and the volume runs to about 342 pages in English.
