Dustjacket condition: Very good, with very light shelfwear. No inscriptions. 224pp. Many colour and b/w illustrations. The New Zealand born architects Am…yas Connell and Basil Ward were in partnership from 1930, and were joined in 1934 by the Cambridge trained architect Colin Lucas. From this point, the practice introduced a type of contemporary architecture exploiting the potential of new materials such as glass, reinforced concrete and steel, resulting in some of the most authentic modern buildings of the period, including High and Over and New Farm or the White House. The practice was dissolved in 1939 and the partners went their separate ways.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 224 pages : illustrations (some colour), plans ; 31 cm. Summary:"Connell Ward and Lucas were seen by some as irritants on the British architectural scene of the 1930s - a scene largely the province of traditionalists, class snobberies and latent xenophobia. They ruffled the…feathers of the architectural establishment and poured scorn on the ignorant and restrictive practices of the planners. They even infuriated their MARS Group colleagues. Never deviating from their beliefs in Corbusian principles, they produced the most authentic modern buildings of the period, many of which now have iconic significance." "This book is the first major monograph on Connell Ward and Lucas and the result of many years of research and study. It puts the work of the trio into the context of the times and incorporates unique material obtained from their colleagues, friends and relatives as well as contemporary and newly commissioned photographs, original drawings and authoritative statements by all three partners."--BOOK JACKET.

Add to basketFine in publishers cloth in like dustjacket. With their original and innovative projects, Amyas Connell and Basil Ward from New Zealand and the British architect Colin Lucas introduced a new and uncompromising contemporary language of architecture to England in the 1930s. Their simple, clear shapes in concrete and glass still re…sonate with a novel approach to functional form-giving. This is the first full study of one of the most controversial of modernist practices and is destined to be of classic importance. It opens with a fascinating overview of the historical background and then focuses on detailed studies of individual houses, social housing schemes, shops and cafs. Each study is fully illustrated with contemporary plans and photographs showing the buildings as they were being built and newly constructed, as well as more recent photographs to show later alterations and changes. The book includes a complete list of projects, a time line and a full bibliography. ISBN 9780711227682.
