Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the contentious issue of protectionism versus free trade policies that has divided the US Democrat and Republican parties since the early 1900s. The author's in-depth study includes historical data and contemporary accounts of economic successes and failures that ill…ustrate the advantages and disadvantages of each policy. They argue that despite technological advancements, global trade wars persist and have only intensified in recent years. The book's detailed examination of tariffs, import-export fluctuations, and the complexities of international trade provides valuable insights for understanding the ongoing debates over protectionism and free trade. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Concerned with tariff revisions in the early 1900s, this book argues that the wool industry should be subject to lower import duties. The author emphasizes that a group of powerful protectionist interests, including woolgrowers and woolen manufacturers associations, successfully lobbie…d for prohibitive tariffs that unduly benefited their members while placing a heavy burden on the American consumer. The book's analysis of the 1909 Payne-Aldrich Tariff suggests that it made little effort to reduce the cost of wool products for Americans, and that it was intended instead to maintain high tariffs in the interest of the protective industries. When President Taft convened a special session of Congress to pass the Canadian Reciprocity Agreement in 1911, the House instead proposed revisions to the Payne-Aldrich Tariff, arguing that the earlier act had failed to deliver on the Democratic Party's promise of relief from excessive tariffs. Despite the support of the President, the 1911 bill was vetoed; however, the report of the Tariff Board commissioned afterwards to study the issue found no reason to alter the 1911 bill's recommendations. The author includes this report in the book and argues that it supports the conclusion that the 1911 bill should become law. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Reed Smoot was elected to the Senate in 1903 (Senators were not elected by popular vote at that time) and his seat in the Senate was immediately challenged by anti-Mormon interests. This volume of testimony represents the opening rounds of the hearing which continued until the issued was resolved in…1907 with a vote giving Smoot his seat by the margin of a single vote. Principle issues were poligamy and Smoot's powerful position in the Mormon Church. These hearings produced the 1904 2nd Manifesto in which Joseph F. Smith strengthened the Church position ending poligamy as a sanctioned practice. The book is in good condition light wear to the covers (minor fading and soiling) and a small missing bit of the top spine. Speckling to leading page edges.
