Wrappers. Condition: Good. National Academy of Sciences, National Research Council, Published 1951. Wraps, vii, 49 pp.; 26 cm; illustrated with black-and-white photographs, charts and maps. In good condition. Pale green covers printed with a line map of the New York Bight show mild shelf wear and toning along all edges, with scattered small stains and a prominent brown stain at upper left of front cover. Small nicks and light creasing to edges and corners, and a short crease at lower right of rear cover. Ink acquisition note dated January 1952 at lower right of front cover, small blue ink mark on rear cover. Staple and glue bound; binding tight. Woods Hole and the Fish and Wildlife Service ran the studies: iron accumulation in sea water and bottom sediment, effects on plankton and bottom fauna, water transparency, and circulation in the bight traced by drift bottles. Alfred Redfield, of the Redfield ratio, was the Woods Hole author and its associate director at the time. An early document in the long argument over ocean dumping. Contents: Preface; The Sport Fishery of the New York Bight; The Behavior of Waste upon Discharge into the Sea; The Biological Effects of Waste Discharge; Evidence on the Accumulation of Wastes Following Prolonged Barging Operations; The Circulation of Water in the New York Bight; Conclusions; References.…
