Both covers are loose and have been secured at the inner hinge with acid-resistant film pad. The leather is scuffed, front cover has scratches. Contains approximately 300 pages, of which 74 contain approximately 65 recipes (some double-sided), written in ink in a rather idiosyncratic handwriting. Fifteen pages at the back of the book contain notes (names, prices, etc., presumably butter sales? - see notes and photos). The endpapers and first pages are written on the front and back in pencil with names and some London addresses. The outside is in fair condition, the inside is still in good condition. --- Originaler Lederband mit intakter Messing-Schließe (abschließbar, aber der Schlüssel fehlend) sowie bunt marmorierten Schnitten. Beide Deckel sind lose und wurden im Innengelenk mit säurehaltigem Filmpolast befestigt. Das Leder ist beschabt, Vorderdeckel mit Kratzspuren. Enthalten sind etwa 300 Blatt , davon sind 74 Blatt mit etwa 65 Rezepten (teils zweiseitig), mit Tinte in recht eigenwilliger Handschrift ausgefüllt. Von der hinteren Seite des Buches aus sind 15 Blatt mit Notizen beschrieben (Namen, Preisangaben u. a., wohl Butterverkäufe ? - siehe Anmerkung und Fotos ). Vorsätze und erste Seiten sind vorn und hinten in Bleistift mit Namen und teils Londoner Adressen beschrieben. Außen mäßig, innen noch gut erhalten. With the name Theophilus Clements and the date of March 8th 1815 to upper cover, and another name and later (1857) date to front pastedown. A collection of various recipes, receipts and medical receipts, predominantly in the same hand, but with others as well. The receipts include 'To clean brass and copper', 'To take rust from iron', 'Blacking', and 'To Distroy (sic) Mice and Rats'. The recipes are mainly for cakes and wine, including 'Raspberry Vinegar', 'Calf's Foot Jelly', 'Black Currant Wine', 'To Preserve Cucumbers', 'Ginger Cakes, 'Shrewsbury Cakes', 'Blancmanges', 'Arrow Root Pudding', 'Ginger Wine', 'Orange Wine', 'Rich Plumb (sic) Cake', 'Apple, Potatoe (sic), and Lemon Cheesecakes', 'Bread Without Yeast', 'To Preserve Rhubarb', 'Currant, Gooseberry, and Raspberry Wine', and 'A Very Good Cake'. The medical receipts include a remedy for 'Weakness and Decline', 'Bitters for a Weak Stomach', 'Receipt for the Dropsy', 'For a Cough', 'Chilblains', 'A Cure for Boils', 'For a Sprain', 'Excellent Pills for a Headache', 'Cure for Piles', 'Remedy for Rheumatism, Lumbago', 'Whooping Cough', a 'Cure for Cholera', and an 'Ointment for Cancer', which involves the green leaves of broad beans. Rectangular small 8vo, (8" x 5"), split calf, receipt book 1801 written on cover some faded writing on other cover, about 85 leaves. Top cover detached, rear almost detached, covers worn, small pasted label on pastedown, a few pages slightly loose, some aging and browning, and a little staining, but internally very good overall. Interesting early Rhode Island business receipt book for the Jacob Whitman & Co. Based in Providence, Whitman appears to be an auctioneer. Consignors used Whitman to sell a broad range of items, including tobacco, tea, old cloths, chairs, soap and even chocolate. Most of the writing is legible (some more than others), and many consignors signed the book to acknowledge receipt of payment. There are about 85 leaves, and information is recorded on both sides of the page.
