Robert Rantoul, Jr. (1805-1852) was an American lawyer and politician. He served in the United States Senate and House of Representatives, representing Massachusetts, from 1851-1852. Rantoul's oration is printed from about Pages 1-74. In his speech, Rantoul speaks in a poetic style about the Battles of Lexington and Concord. He generally chronicles the sequence of events leading up to the American Revolution by beginning with antiquity and some of the chronology of the two battles. Throughout the address, he references events from antiquity and commends the American revolutionaries for seeking a democratic form of government. Page 75-135 onward contains a "Brief Account of the Celebration of the Nineteenth of April, at Concord, 1850." This account summarizes through narrative description and reprinted correspondence the commemorative celebration that took place on April 19, 1850 at Concord. The celebration included military exercises, music played by a band, and various speeches.
