Wie in anderen Fällen war auch hier die Nachftage sicher: Ranneys Durchsuchungsergebnis war transatlantisch begehrt. In den USA und in Kanada hatte man sich nach den Ölkrisen von 1973 und 1979 an die eigenen Ölschiefer- und Teersände-Vorkommen erinnert. Und in Frankfurt war man elektrisiert: die Tochter Lurgi besaß zusammen mit der Ruhrgas AG ein weltweit gefragtes, patentiertes Verfahren zur thermischen Veredelung von feinkörnigen Kohlen und eben Ölschiefer (das sogenannte Lurgi-Ruhrgas-Verfahren / LR-Prozess). Lurgi baute längst weltweit Großanlagen - unter anderem die berühmte Ölschiefer-Anlage in Estland (Raffinerie Narva) und Projekte in den USA (Colorado). Um diese marktbeherrschende Stellung zu nutzen, war für die Frankfurter Ingenieure das zeitnahe Wissen unverzichtbar, was die amerikanische Konkurrenz im Patentamt angemeldet hatte.
