Er plazierte es in zwei seiner Publikationsreihen: als Nummer 49 in der Energy technology Review' und als Nummer 137 in der Chemical technology Reviev'. Den Verlag kennen wir: die Noyes Data Corporation bezog ihr Wissen direkt aus den amtlichen Veröffentlichungen des US-Patentamtes (dem USPTO - United States Patent and Trademark Office). Die Quelle: das "Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office" - ein wöchentlich erscheinendes Verkündungsblatt, in dem jedes neu erteilte Patent mit einer kurzen Zusammenfassung (Abstract), den wichtigsten rechtlichen Ansprüchen (Claims) und einer technischen Zeichnung aufgelistet wurde. Sobald zum Beispiel unser Redakteur Ranney über Patente aus der Chemie- oder Werkstofftechnik stolperte', folgte die Anforderung der vollständigen Patentschriften (Specifications) beim USPTO. Damit war Noyes Data Corporation kein klassischer Buchverlag, sondern einer der weltweit ersten datenbasierten Informationsdienstleister. Er durchforstete die öffentlich zugänglichen Staatsarchive des US-Patentamtes, komprimierte seine Funde themenspezifisch und verkaufte diese "Spionageberichte" an interessierte Konzerne. Unser vorliegendes Buch lieferte eine systematische Zusammenstellung von US-Patenten der 1970er Jahre, die sich mit der Gewinnung und Verarbeitung von Ölschiefer (Oil Shale) und Teersänden (Tar Sands) befassen. Es sammelte die Patente für hochkomplexe chemische und thermische Verfahren (wie die In-situ-Retortierung, Lösungsmittelextraktion und Hydrierung), um das zähe Kerogen und Bitumen aus dem Gestein zu brechen und in flüssiges Rohöl zu verwandeln. Wie in anderen Fällen war auch hier die Nachftage sicher: Ranneys Durchsuchungsergebnis war transatlantisch begehrt. In den USA und in Kanada hatte man sich nach den Ölkrisen von 1973 und 1979 an die eigenen Ölschiefer- und Teersände-Vorkommen erinnert. Und in Frankfurt war man elektrisiert: die Tochter Lurgi besaß zusammen mit der Ruhrgas AG ein weltweit gefragtes, patentiertes Verfahren zur thermischen Veredelung von feinkörnigen Kohlen und eben Ölschiefer (das sogenannte Lurgi-Ruhrgas-Verfahren / LR-Prozess). Lurgi baute längst weltweit Großanlagen - unter anderem die berühmte Ölschiefer-Anlage in Estland (Raffinerie Narva) und Projekte in den USA (Colorado). Um diese marktbeherrschende Stellung zu nutzen, war für die Frankfurter Ingenieure das zeitnahe Wissen unverzichtbar, was die amerikanische Konkurrenz im Patentamt angemeldet hatte.
