This work proposes severalsignaling protocols in relay networks…and analyzesthe performance limits of these protocols. It isshown that compared to a non-cooperative mode oftransmission, throughput and/or reliability areimmensely enhanced. The reader of this work will getfamiliar with the principles of relay networks. Asummary of the techniques used in relay networks isfirst provided. The relaying schemes ofdecode-and-forward and compress-and-forward arestudied within a novel generalized relay channelmodel. Then, the idea of relay selection ishighlighted and two novel relay selection schemes arepresented. Finally, relaying in interference networksis considered, where multiple source-destinationpairs attempt to communicate together and they areassisted by a dedicated relay station. The protocolspresented in this work have applications in militarycommunications, ad-hoc and sensor networks, andbroadband wireless systems.
