French text. 4to: 215 pp. Publisher's pictorial wrappers, covers lightly foxed and soiled with wear at extremities, spine and front cover lettered in red ink, sunned, title page with inked ownership inscription, text interspersed with numerous black and white illustrations and plates, custom black cloth slipcase, marble boards, slightly rubbed. Very good in a near fine slipcase. "Rops am I, virtuous am I not, hypocrite I do not deign".

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Large hardcover. Text in French. 4to (7.75 x 10 in.). Half bound with spine and corners in deep red pebbled cloth. Boards are covered with red-tinted marbled paper. Cloth shows wear but nothing shaky. Use-wear on the spine but the gilt titles still show some life. 3 of 4 corners are good, not perfect. Upper right one a bit frayed, showing some underneath paper. Pages are remarkably free of any significant foxing. They are also free of markings or soiling. The artistic/biographical text is liberally illustrated with Rops' print work. Most significantlly are the individual prints bound in with the text. A complete list of 23 is provided in the rear of the book. Consulting it reveals that one of the prints, "Dame au carcel", is not present in this copy. Two other prints have lost attachment but are present, in place. Throughout, there are many examples of the artist's "notorious" erotic images. While skilled in drawing and painting, Rops was widely lauded for his artistry and technique as a print maker. This early 20th century edition is a feast for the eyes and the mind.

Printed on Japanese paper. Gilt title and floral ornaments stamped on the spine. Gilt rulings on front and back board. Gilt head. Marbled endpapers. One out of a limited deluxe print run of 125 copies (100 on Japanese paper, and 25 on China paper). Slightly age toned. Pages are clean, and bright. Binding strong and square. Boards and spine lightly shelf worn/rubbed. Bumped corners. Very good condition overall.
