Le Diverse et artificiose machine.Nellequali si contengono varii et industriosi movimenti, degni digrandissima Speculatione, per cavarne beneficio infinito in ogni forte d'operatione; composte in lingua Italiana et Francese. Paris: In casa del'autore, 1588. First edition. Folio (13 5/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 346 x 224 mm.). [16], 338 leaves. Text in French and Italian in Roman and Italic types respectively. Engraved title (*1) within architectural border and with engraved portrait of the author on the verso, both signed with the monogram of Léonard Gaultier (1561-1641). Complete with 194 text engravings numbered I-CXCV (numbers CXLVIII and CXLIX combined as one double-page illustration), twenty of which (numbers XCV, CXLI-CXLV, CXLVII, CXLVIII/CXLIX, CLI-CLIII, CLXXXI-CLXXXIII, CLXXXVI, CLXXXIX-CXCII, and CXCV) are double-page and the remainder full-page. Plates CL, CLI, and CLII signed with the monogram "JG," which some bibliographers have identified as Jean de Gourmont. The remaining plates are unsigned and have been attributed to an unknown atelier, although Gnudi has made an interesting case for attribution to Ramelli's disgruntled associate Ambroise Bachot. Four-line historiated and two-line floriated woodcut initials, woodcut tail-pieces and corner ornaments. Contemporary full calf. Boards and spine ruled and stamped in blind. Blind central device edges sprinkled red. Some wear to binding, including a repair to leather of front board. Leaf uii with a small repair, not touching text or image. Lear A with repair that is just touching the border and a few letters of text on the recto and the border on the verso. Leaf Bb8 with the bottom outer corner renewed, not touching text, all with no loss of text. final figure CXCV with a small repair to bottom margin, not touching image. Some generally foxing and toning and a few insignificant rust spots. Overall, an excellent copy. "Ramelli's book on machinery, one of the most elegantly produced of all technological treatises, emphasized and exploited the unlimited possiblities [sic] of machines. For example, the dozens of water-powered pumps and mills shown in his treatise clearly demonstrated that non-muscular power could be substituted for horse- or human-power in any mechanical task requiring continuous or repetitive application of force, and the portrayal of more than twenty types of water pump (including his own invention, the rotary pump) destroyed the notion that there were necessary limits to the configuration or arrangement of a machine. Ramelli's mechanical astuteness showed itself both in his inventions and in his innovative combinations of fundamental elements. His machines became part of the common stock of mechanical knowledge, and his mechanical treatise remained a primary influence for at least two centuries. The plates in Ramelli's treatise are artistically as well as technologically superb, the bilingual text beautifully printed, and both plates and text surrounded by handsome borders of typographic ornaments. The reasons for this sumptuousness were twofold: First, Ramelli had dedicated the book to his patron Henri III; and second, he had previously had several designs stolen from him by a trusted associate (probably Ambroise Bachot, later engineer to Henri IV), who published them in corrupt and mutilated form and claimed them as his own. As a result of this experience Ramelli planned his treatise as a particularly lavish work that would be difficult to counterfeit, and produced and published it from his own house where he could maintain absolute control over the project. He succeeded in preventing any pirated editions and made the book so expensive and difficult to produce that it was reprinted only once, in a German edition of 1620, before the twentieth century" (Norman Library). Dibner 173. Harvard, French, 452. Norman Library 1777. M.T. Gnudi, "Agostino Ramelli and Ambroise Bachot," Technology and Culture 15 (1974), pp. 614-625. HBS 69495. $27,500. Signed.…

[32]pp; 336 leaves: this copy lacking 37 leaves with 29 engravings; 166 of the 195 engraved plates, some double page are present. List of missing plates on request. This seminal book consists of engravings of various machines devised by the engineer Agostino Ramelli (1531-c. 1610). Born in southern Switzerland, Ramelli served in the French army during the Wars of Religion (1562-98) and proved himself a competent engineer during the 1572 siege of La Rochelle which brought him to the attention of the future King Henri III (reigned 1574-89).In 1588, Ramelli published this book, written in French and Italian. It provides detailed images of both civic and military machines. More than half of the volume consists of engravings of pumping machines and water mills, while another large section is devoted to ingenious siege engines. Ramelli also included a design for a book wheel, a device which allows a person to read multiple books at once, and a design allowing servants to water plants without being seen by the household. This fundamental work for the history of technology offers a panorama of instruments and machines engraved in intaglio on 166 (out of 195) full-page or double-page plates, featuring pumps, fountains, derricks, movable bridges, forges, cranes, siege engines, book wheels, etc., which inspired the iconography of mechanics books for more than two centuries. The work is also adorned with a rich title frame anda portrait of the author engraved by Léonard Gaultier (1561-1641).Agostino Ramelli (1531-1590), a native of Ponte Tresa, trained as a mathematician and then participated in the Italian Wars as a military engineer. Upon his arrival in France, he placed himself under the protection of the Duke of Anjou, the future Henry III, the work's dedicatee. Add to basketEncuadernación de tapa dura. Condition: Muy bueno. 1ª Edición. Folio (375 x 244 mm). Text in French and Italian. Bound in 19th-century 3/4 vellum. A monumental copy, with dimensions suggestive of the rare 'Large Paper' issue. At 375mm height, this exemplar constitutes a nec plus ultra of preservation, significantly exceeding the standard market copies (typically c. 335345 mm) and notably surpassing the celebrated Haskell F. Norman copy (368 mm). The exceptional wide margins allow the intricate typographical fleurons and Gaultiers architectural frames to be appreciated with their intended visual breathing room. Complete. Generally a very good, well-preserved copy with strong impressions of the plates; showing some stains, foxing, and browning to the paper. Engraved title within architectural frame by Leonard Gaultier; engraved portrait of Ramelli by Gaultier on title-page verso. Illustrated with 194 engravings, 20 of which are full-sheet, numbered I-CXCV (with CXLVIII and CXLIX combined on a single engraving) and three signed with the cipher JG. One of the most important books on the science and technology of machines in the Renaissance. With the publication of this book Ramelli demonstrated for the world, the unlimited possibilities of machines (Norman). The superb engravings depict all manner of machinery from pumps and hydraulics to cranes and siege machinery, including the famous 'bookwheel'. Of the 195 machines pictured, the breakdown is as follows: 110 water-raising machines; 21 grain mills; 4 other mills; 10 cranes; 7 machines for dragging large objects; 2 machines to raise excavated earth; 2 cofferdams; 4 fountains; 1 book wheel; 15 military bridges; 14 screw jacks; 4 hurling engines; and 1 gunner's quadrant. Folio (20.5 x 31.5 cm), [16], 338 ff., including engraved t.-p., engraved portrait of author (on verso) and 194 (numbered 195) full and double-page illustrations of machines. Bound in 18th-century French tree calf, rebacked, later endpapers, covers with gilt border of interlocking circles, spine in eight compartments, with alternating motifs of suns and densely tooled rows of stars, rather in the style of Derôme, with red morocco title label gilt. Mistakenly dated 1680, after ownership inscription on title. Engraved ex-libris of Baehler, Schloss Neu-Habsburg on front end pastedown. Ownership inscription in lower margin of title: "à Rome ce 8 aout 1680 Morga" (?); early ownership inscription in lower edge of plate-mark scored, with minor loss to lower edge of cartouche beneath portrait (on verso); upper blank edge of title a little frayed and reinforced verso; gutter reinforced at lower margin of last leaf. Generally good dark impressions of the plates. First and sole edition of this profusely illustrated landmark on early technology, and along with Agricola's De Re Metallica (1556), the most influential and copied of all the early illustrated manuals of inventions and machines. Its influence was felt in such later works as Böckler's Theatrum machinarum (1662), Grollier de Servière's treatise (1719), and it was even copied in China, where it had been taken by Jesuit missionaries. Roughly half of the machines are pumps for raising water or for other hydraulic purposes, with the remainder including mills, looms, derricks, metal-working tools, presses, even mechanical fountains. Many are of course connected with warfare: in addition to weapons, 13 chapters are devoted to machines for breaking and entering forcing doors, lifting doors off their hinges, cutting through metal fences and all of which Ramelli insists can be accomplished without the perpetrator being discovered. The lavish number of illustrations and their quality set something of a contemporary standard for a technological publication. Though rooted in the general tendency of these works to illustrate as well as explain, Ramelli was motivated, in addition, by the wish to discourage every prospect of his designs from being pirated (preface, **5v-**8r). "Ramelli planned this work as a particularly handsome volume, difficult to counterfeit, strictly supervised by the author himself and published with the imprint, 'in casa del' autore'"(Mortimer 452). The engraved title and portrait are signed with the monogram of Leonard Gaultier, and 3 of the plates with the monogram JG, which some bibliographers have identified as Jean de Gourmont. The remaining plates are unsigned and have been attributed to an unknown atelier, though an interesting case for an attribution to a craftsman in the Ramelli household, Ambroise Bachot, has been made by Gnudi. Bachot is himself the author of two important and quite rare illustrated works on fortification, the Timon published in 1587 and the Le Gouvernail, published in Melun in 1598. * Mortimer (French) II.452; Riccardi I.341; R. Nelle quali si contengono varii et industriosi Movimenti, degni di Grandissima Speculatione, per cavarne beneficio infinito in ogni sorte d'operatione. Paris, in casa del autore 1588. Édition originale de l'important traité illustré d'Augustin Ramelli, l'ingénieur Italien du roi Henri III, dédiée à ce monarque. Brunet IV, 1095 ; Mortimer, French, 452 ; Dibner, Heralds of Science, 173 ; Norman, 1777.

Legatura in pelle settecentesca.

[16], 338, engraved architectural title page by Leonard Gaultier, engraved portrait of Ramelli by Gaultier to title-page verso, 195 engraved plates numbered I-CXCV (20 of which double-page), text within typographic frames, woodcut initials and tailpieces; recased, extremities lightly rubbed, small marks to boards, small inkstains to lower corner of textblock; 85-mm loss to title with with old paper repair, affecting 4 words of text (supplied in ink facsimile), occasional marginal staining and light offsetting, occasional tiny wormhole to inner margin (touching only double-page plates), but generally a very good, bright copy; ink annotations in a contemporary hand to final verso (see below).First edition, printed for the author, of one of the most celebrated illustrated books of the sixteenth century, and 'one of the most elegantly produced of all technological treatises' (Norman), written in Italian and French and featuring the earliest known depiction of a bookwheel, our copy including a contemporary, seemingly unpublished French vernacular love poem in manuscript.Born near the Swiss-Italian border, Agostino Ramelli (1531-c. 1610) trained in military architecture before joining the army of the renowned condottiero and Spanish general Gian Giacomo Medici (1498-1555). After Medici's death, he entered the employ of the Duke of Savoy and by 1565 had relocated to France, where he entered the service of the future Henry III. In 1572, during the siege of La Rochelle, Ramelli was gravely wounded and taken prisoner by the Huguenots. Upon his release, he remained in the French king's service and, in 1587, was entrusted by Catherine de' Medici with overseeing the fortification of Paris.Le diverse et artificiose machine, Ramelli's magnum opus, is renowned for its blend of technical innovation and artistic refinement. The treatise explores the vast potential of mechanical invention and had a profound impact on the development of mechanical and military engineering in early modern Europe, including the work of Grollier de Serviere and Jacob Leupold. The work was developed over several years in collaboration with fellow military engineer Ambroise Bachot, and was likely printed in a press installed in Ramelli's own Paris residence.Dedicated to Henry III, the volume opens with Leonard Gaultier's striking portrait of the author: richly attired, seated at a table, helmet in one hand and compass in the other, measuring the plan of a fortress. The book presents an extraordinary array of mechanical inventions: 'One hundred and ten water-lifting machines, twenty-one grain mills, four alternative mill designs, ten cranes, seven transport mechanisms for heavy loads, two earth-lifting devices, two cisterns, four fountains, fifteen military bridges, fourteen screw jacks and other wall-demolishing tools, one artillery mechanism, and more' (DBI, trans.). Many of these are supported by enlarged schematics showing the intricate gear systems that animate them, testament to Ramelli's meticulous concern for mechanical precision.Among the 195 plates is the earliest known European depiction of a bookwheel (plate CLXXXVIII), a rotating reading desk modelled after a water wheel, designed to allow simultaneous consultation of multiple large volumes. It is often cited as one of the earliest 'information retrieval' machines, and was especially recommended by Ramelli for readers 'troubled by gout or otherwise incapacitated', an early nod to accessibility in design. Also featured is an automaton inspired by Hero of Alexandria, comprising a group of birds perched on the branches of a large vase which move and sing when activated by air pressure (plate CLXXXVII).Plates CXLVIII and CXLIX appear as a single engraving; three others are signed with the cipher 'JG', possibly referring to Jean de Gourmont. A German translation, titled Schatzka.…
