Über das Leben von Imre Nagy ist außerhalb Ungarns dennoch fast nichts bekannt. Im Gedenkjahr der 50. Wiederkehr des Volksaufstands von 1956 erscheint deshalb jetzt die einfühlsame Biographie von Janos M. Rainer, einem der besten Kenner der Ungarischen Revolution. Er stützt sich auf umfassende Recherchen in ungarischen und in russischen Archiven, u. a. auf die umfangreichen Prozeßakten und auf die Selbstzeugnisse Nagys. Sein spannendes Buch schildert das Leben eines überzeugten Kommunisten, eines Parteisoldaten aus der Provinz, der 1930 in die UdSSR emigrierte und nach der Rückkehr aus Moskau 1945 Inhaber höchster Staats- und Parteiämter wurde, sich in dieser Zeit aber zum Gegner des Stalinismus und zum Verfechter eines "Neuen Kurses", einer "wirklich sozialistischen Gesellschaft" entwickelte und 1956 an die Spitze einer Revolution gegen das bestehende System trat.
