L'impaginazione delle scene è ispirata infatti a un tipo di rilievo del I secolo d. C., noto come la "Tabula iliaca", che illustra episodi dell'Iliade e dell'Odissea in una serie di piccoli pannelli narrativi disposti attorno a una scena principale. Il tema è tratto dall'Eneide di Virgilio, che narra le vicende degli esuli fuggiti da Troia sconfitta, ostacolati nel loro viaggio da Giunone. In favore della sorte dei Greci, la dea aveva chiesto a Eolo, dio dei venti, di scatenare una tempesta contro le navi dei Troiani.
