Die deutschen Staaten waren von Napoleon besiegt und die neuen Landesherren schalteten und walteten wie es ihnen gefiel. Das Volk litt und achzte unter der napoleonisch…en Zwangsherrschaft. J. P. Palm, Buchhandler in Nurnberg und deutscher Patriot, empfand die Zustande als unertraglich und verlegte in seinem Laden ein anonym verfasstes Schriftstuck gegen Napoleon. Diese rief auch zur Einigkeit der Deutschen auf und trug den Titel ,Deutschland in seiner tiefsten Erniedrigung". Die Franzosen befurchteten Aufruhr und nahmen Palm fest, obwohl dieser bayrischer Staatsburger war und unter die bayrische Gesetzgebung fiel. Palm wurde nach Braunau am Inn verbracht, wo man das alleinige Sagen hatte. Hier wurde er zum Tode verurteilt und erschossen. Ein Sturm der Emporung ging durch Deutschland. Der mutige Buchhandler wurde jedoch zum Sinnbild deutscher Standhaftigkeit und als Nationalheld verehrt.
