Profetico o premonitore, illustrato da episodi celebri dell'Antico Testamento (Nabuchodonosor, i sogni del Faraone spiegati da Giuseppe, il sogno di Giacobbe, etc.) o dall'agiografia visionaria (sogni di Constantino, di san Francesco, di santa Orsola, etc., per non citare che esempi che hanno avuto una grande fortuna figurativa), il Sogno si offre innanzitutto come manifestazione e rivelazione di un altro mondo. La varietà degli artisti coinvolti - illustri come Bosch, Dürer o Michelangelo, o meno conosciuti dal grande pubblico come Mocetto o Naldini - vuol far comprendere come si caratterizza nel Rinascimento la rappresentazione del sogno.
