If we were to ask Michelangelo why we look the way we do, he would answer that this is primarily due to the action of our soul upon our body. In other words, he would say that it is our soul, or the… intellective part of it, that makes us human and organizes and beautifies our body accordingly. This essay shows how these beliefs come from a number of sources that were of upmost importance to the great sculptor, such as Plato and Aristotle, but also Dante, Petrarch, Girolamo Savonarola, Marsilio Ficino. After reviewing the rich tradition that led Michelangelo and most of his contemporaries to think that a man's soul can be "seen" in his body, the book turnes to the relevant beliefs of some more recent authors about some of whose ideas concerning the human soul Michelangelo is likely to have read or heard. Leonardo worked on a painting in the Great Hall of Florence's Pa…lazzo Vecchio for less than a year before abandoning it to pursue other commissions. The uncompleted fresco was reported to be deteriorating rapidly, and less than 50 years later, Giorgio Vasari was commissioned to cover Leonardo's unfinished work with new, large-scale battle scenes. Yet those who saw Leonardo's mural during its brief existence applauded it as his greatest work and commended it as a 'school for the world'.In a new book from The Florentine Press, Finding Leonardo: The Case for Recovering 'The Battle of Anghiari', art historian Rab Hatfield revisits historical data and scholarly analysis in light of new archival evidence and results from recent thermographic examinations to clarify the painting's exact location in the Palazzo Vecchio.Rather than submit his research to a scholarly journal, which was his original intent, Hatfield, a past Member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and former Fellow of Villa I Tatti, decided to publish with a fledgling popular press. Support from actor and art historian Peter Weller and The Friends of Florence, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoration of the city's art treasures, made publication through The Florentine Press possible.In an essay for the general reader, Hatfield identifies the mural's location, posits its probable size and context, considers the possible existence of other work, and explores the complex issues of the painting's state and the viability of its recovery. In this study Rab Hatfield provides a thorough, no-nonsense analysis of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa or La Gioconda. The book begins with a consideration of the generally known sources and documents and a careful look at t…he painting as we know it now. There follow discussions of rarely examined laboratory photographs and of a recently discovered annotation by Ser Agostino Vespucci in a book he owned of letters by Cicero, from which we learn that Leonardo left a portrait of "Lisa del Giocondo" unfinished no later than October 1503. The book concludes with a hitherto unknown letter written in 1515 by Filippo Strozzi to Lorenzo de' Medici, Captain General of the Florentine Armies and soon to become Duke of Urbino, describing some supposed advances these two men made to Mon(n)a Lisa. The laboratory photographs and newly discovered sources make it clear that the Mona Lisa has probably been reworked twice, that it in fact depicts Mon(n)a Lisa del Giocondo, and that it would be better if we spoke of it as La Gioconda rather than the Mona Lisa.
