Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the Americas, colonialism informs nearly all aspects of life. From European invasion onward it established a durable matrix of power based on gender relations, racism and ethnic classifications that defined white and criollo male superiority over the indigenous and 'Afro American' as well as over Asian, Jewish, Arabic, Muslim and Hindu populations, peoples and nations, in spite of the ambiguity of ethnic and racial frontiers. Moreover, in recent times, the thrust to decolonize has become a major aspiration that implies the rescue and re-evaluation of native and subordinated cultures.Colonialism has deeply informed cultural production and popular culture in the Americas. Jazz, blues, rock music and hip-hop have given voice to the experience of ethnic and racial exclusion and Latin America's boom literature is informed by 'magic' indigenous-colonial cosmovisions. Ethnic and racial struggles against quota systems and/or auto-ethnographic media productions are integral parts of the fight against the negative aspects of the colonial legacy. This volume adopts a broad concept of colonialism, which refers not only to a specific historical period but also to a relational mode that creates asymmetric power relations and modes of exploitation that persist and that are constantly renewed but also contested. Rather than trying to give a comprehensive account of colonial and decolonial dynamics, this collection illustrates the centrality of colonialism in the history of the Americas and the wide range of areas in which decolonizing efforts and postcolonial processes continue to impact the Western Hemisphere. Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear to the glossy pictorial cloth over boards, bright interior, unmarked. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. From the publisher's blurb, "Whereas the cultural and political influence of the U.S. on Europe and Germany has been researched extensively, the impact of more than 6 million German immigrants on U.S.-American history and culture has received far less scholarly attention. Therefore this volume addresses a wide range of areas in which a German presence has been manifesting itself in the U.S. for more than three centuries. Among the disciplines involved in this broad analysis are linguistics, literary studies, history, economics, musicology as well as media studies and cultural studies." Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the causes and treatment of pathological and spontaneous fractures, a topic of significant interest in the field of orthopedics. The author examines various bone diseases that can lead to abnormal bone fragility, including scurvy, tertiary syphilis, and osteomyelitis. The book also discusses the formation of a bone sheath around the sequestrum, a protective layer that aims to prevent further bone damage. However, the author emphasizes that this sheath, known as the sequestral capsule, may be susceptible to fractures, which can occur due to trauma, active movements, or premature surgical intervention. The author provides detailed insights into the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of these fractures, highlighting the importance of recognizing them to ensure appropriate treatment. Case studies are included to illustrate the clinical presentation and management of spontaneous fractures, demonstrating the complexities and challenges faced by surgeons. Overall, the book offers valuable information for orthopedic surgeons and researchers seeking to understand the causes, prevention, and treatment of pathological and spontaneous fractures. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

A touch of wear to tips of corners. Short creases to cover edges. Faint discolouration on the spine. -- "The twenty-two essays in this collection examine a wide scope of past and present cultural interrelations in the Americas. Exploring mutual gazes, separations, and linkages, this volume highlights regional, national, and transnational contacts in the New World; it raises awareness of the contrasts that separate American cultures; and it examines the confluences of New World issues, traditions, and practices. Contributing to the emerging field of Inter-American Studies, this collection increases our theoretical understanding of cultural hybridity and it demonstrates that cultural hybridity is by no means a recent phenomenon in the Americas." -- Contents: Introduction: Cultural Hybridity in the Americas; I.
