1 vol. large 8-vo(255 x 170 mm) of : XIX ( homage, false title, foreword, preliminary lessons); 292 pp.; X (table, lists). (untrimmed copy). Publisher's paperback. First edition of this Annamite course by R. Bulteau, administrator of the Civil Services of Indochina and professor of Annamite. This very complete textbook is intended for second year students of Annamite and is part of Bulteau's free Annamite course in Hanoi. The book has a dedication printed on the first page: "In homage to Mr. Pierre Abel Delsalle, Inspector of Political and Administrative Affairs in Tonkin". Bulteau is a former student of the École Coloniale, a graduate of the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes and a graduate of the 2nd degree in the Annamite language. In the foreword of his work, Bluteau first recalls the writing system of Annamite, the ancient name of Vietnamese. Indeed, Vietnamese was first written with Chinese characters, then with demotic characters (derived from the previous ones), and finally, from the 17th century, with the Latin alphabet brought by the Portuguese. The author then insists on the fact that Annamite is a tonal monosyllabic language and that from then on, it is necessary to add accents on the syllables in Latin alphabet in order to note the tone. This is the major difficulty that this language presents for speakers of other non-tonal languages. This is why Bulteau insists on the need to.…
