Bei näherer Betrachtung ergibt sich, daß die Differenzen auf Entwicklungen Kirchners hinweisen, die erst Jahre später ihren Niederschlag finden sollten. Dies dürfte auch die anhaltende große Wertschätzung des Gemäldes durch den Künstler selbst erklären. Thomas Röske verortet den »Tanz zwischen den Frauen« im Gesamtwerk des Künstlers und erklärt die Besonderheiten des Gemäldes vom künstlerischen Entwicklungsstand und aus der biographischen Situation Kirchners heraus im Jahre 1915.
